Get Your Game On at the library

Wii proposal...

Well, I gave my proposal to the advisory board of our branch. It didn't go over too well. They are very concerned with getting value for the money spent. I have offered to provide more literature at the next meeting along with a demo. I hope the demo shows them that the Wii is different, more active, and fun for them as well as cool for teens. Any advice?

My board and management had me write up a justification for the Wii. I wrote it up like a college paper, complete with a bibliography, citing Jenny Levine's book (2006) Gaming and Libraries: Intersection of Services, Scott Nicholson's book (2007) The Role of Gaming in Libraries, as well as things I found online like Jessica Baca's paper about media literacy, Richard Kahn and George Kellner's article on technoliteracy, other articles by Douglas Kellner, and Kurt Squire's 2001 article Video Games in Education. I also used Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory and talked about Visual Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Logical-Mathematical and Intra- and Interpersonal intelligences.

Hope this helps!

I did a very similar thing, but shorter than a normal college paper. My branch manager didn't think it would be good to do a long paper. Even the two pages that I did seemed long to him. At the next meeting, they would like to see some of the sources I used. I hope to demo the system and answer questions then. A kind of Q&A session.

Their biggest concern is that we are a small library, so why bother? Will this generate interest from the community? I think so. But now I have to prove it. I have a meeting with some teens before this board meeting, so I hope to get some input from them.

Kymberley, do you have a copy of the proposal you wrote? I would love to see what I am missing. If you wouldn't mind? Thanks!
